POSITION SUMMARY: The Interim Director of Intercultural Programs provides leadership for the Intercultural Programs Office by contributing to the college’s priority of diversity and global engagement, and by fulfilling the mission of the Student Life Division through programs and relationships that support, educate and celebrate cultural, ethnic and racial diversity.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in student development, intercultural studies or related field preferred. Requires 3-5 years of relevant experience, along with an understanding of, and commitment to, the college’s priority of diversity and global engagement. Other qualifications include the ability to:
- Support the mission of Westmont College and the Community Life Statement;
- Demonstrate a winsome personality and active, vibrant Christian faith;
- Articulate the distinctives of a Christian liberal arts college;
- Be oriented to a Biblical and Christian theological framework for the pursuit of justice, peace, equity and reconciliation;
- Articulate an understanding of and respond to the unique needs of students of color and international students;
- Utilize one’s experience in intercultural and global contexts to establish positive relations across cultural, ethnic, racial and international differences;
- Develop and implement programming and training for engagement with domestic and international cultural and ethnic differences;
- Communicate clearly and effectively in both writing and speaking.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In alignment with the mission of the college, develop and implement the vision for the Office of Intercultural Programs.
- Ensure strong leadership, advising of, and programming through the seven student Intercultural Organizations (ICO’s) in ICP: Asian Student Association, Black Student Union, Global & International Student Association, Latine Student Union, Multi-Ethic Student Association and Students for Racial Justice.
- Develop and implement programs to address historic and current issues related to race and engagement with domestic and international cultural and ethnic differences.
- Keep abreast of the cultural climate and tone on campus in regards to cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity and respond to teachable moments, cultivating open dialogue on campus to deepen relationships surrounding the challenges and realities of diversity and global engagement.
- Partner with the Campus Pastor in advancing the college’s vision for diversity in chapel and other venues.
- Serve as a resource for the Center for Student Success and assist in interventions and support for students of color and international students as needed.
- Serve on the Student Life Leadership Team, represent the Student Life Division on various committees as determined by the VP for Student Life and Dean of Student Engagement and participate in divisional assessment efforts.
- Lead educational programming efforts aligned with divisional learning emphases as needed (especially Diversity & Global Engagement).
- Establish partnerships and collaborate with offices and individuals on campus to recruit and support students of color and international students.
- Conduct administration work as requested by the Dean of Student Engagement (e.g., budget management, report writing).
